Payment Request

General concept · Payments, Clearing & Settlement · Last reviewed: September 2026

A payment request is a structured message specifying the information a payer needs to complete a payment, such as the amount, asset, destination, network, reference, or expiration time.

Explanation

Stablecoin payment requests can be delivered through an invoice, API response, QR code, wallet link, or other machine-readable format. A well-formed request reduces ambiguity by identifying the exact token and blockchain network as well as the destination. Some payment requests also include metadata used for reconciliation or a time-limited exchange-rate quote.

Boundaries

A payment request communicates what should be paid and where. Payment authorization is the payer's approval of the resulting transaction.

Why it matters

Structured requests reduce manual entry errors and give merchants a reliable link between blockchain transactions and orders or invoices.

Example

A payment request can instruct a customer to send 250 USDC on a specified network to a specified address before a stated expiration time.
